For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

2 Peter 2:20

20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

 

            When we walk in the world, it “stains” us. We cannot help it, unless we constantly allow the Holy Spirit to control our actions. The world is defiled, and everyone who comes into contact with it runs the risk of being defiled also. This defilement is usually deceptive. The person being defiled isn’t even aware of the defilement until it’s too late. That’s because it looks o.k. As we grow in the knowledge of Jesus through His Word, we can escape these defilements. It’s like a vine with many tendrils. We don’t see them, and our feet get entangled in them. We then stumble and fall. Jesus told Peter He only needed to wash his hands and feet. Figuratively, that’s the parts of us that come into contact with the world. When we’re born again, our spirits cannot be influence by the world, but our soul can. Our “hands” and “feet” are what “touch” the things of the world.

            This verse tells us that if we do get entangled in the affairs of the world, the last state will be worse than never having experienced salvation at all.

 

If you could hear God speak to you, I believe this is what He would say:

            "You will not be like the world if you walk in the truth of My Word. You will not be overcome by anything if you stay in My Word. There is peace in no other source. There is truth in no other source. You are complete in My Word and will overcome all obstacles to your growth. You will not succeed unless you walk in the power of My holiness. There is success in no other way than in Me. You are overcomers in Me and shall show many people the way to Me. You will never stumble and fall in Me as long as you allow My Spirit to control your actions. You are complete in Me as long as you allow Me to guide your ways and actions.”

 

            72. I have escaped the defilements of the world and will never be entangled by them again.
